1. a dark-colored substance, much like tar, that is used for waterproofing roofs, building foundations, and other surfaces; mineral pitch. It is found in natural beds in various parts of the world and also obtained by refining crude petroleum.
2. a smooth, hard mixture of this substance with crushed rock or sand. Asphalt is used in surfacing roads.
